-to-face negotiations. democrats say this is simply a ruse, mitch mcconnell trying to go around harry reid, the democratic leader here and appealing to joe biden, trying to make it look in democratic estimation as if republicans are going the last mile, but, look, we're stuck. we're nowhere at this point. there was a major setback earlier. you mentioned it, the so-called chained cpi. a lot of people tweeted me and said what the heck is that? simply a revised way of adjusting cost of living increases to social security recipients that would in effect lower the growth of those payments, lower the rate of inflation, lower the cost of living increase most times. republicans have evidently put that on the table. that was what really got these negotiations to a standstill. they emerged from their lunch, did republicans, just a few minutes ago, and it's clear it's now off the table. it's a dead letter. unclear whether that's going to help move these along in any way, shape or form. harry reid, before his closed door luncheon, said he was still cautiously optimistic. hard to see from our perspecti

connell is at the capitol and assuming he's in contact with harry reid and their staffs are going back and forth. the question has been every single day we've been into these negotiations. what is the threshold that republicans are willing to take to avert the fiscal cliff. there's their 400,000. so everyone who makes $400,000 their taxes would stay the same. would that be acceptable. if there is no deal to be reached we do know that harry reid will try to move forward on monday with the bill for those making $250,000 or below. so that's what we need to see how it will work there. there are types of sweeteners they can do. mitch mcconnell is a tough place and this is the underreported part of the story. he has to figure out a deal that gets through the senate and doesn't make john boehner look too bad in the house and there are a lot of conservatives in the house that don't want to do any type of deal that would raise taxes on anybody even though they'll go up on the entire country the first tax hike in 20 years after monday night. >> and one would also assume that mitch mcconnell would have to

it not for harry reid. harry reid has told us so many stories of his youth and his background in that tiny town and what brought him to this station in life today. i almost feel if there were a town or high school reunion i could attend it with harry and look around and recognize a lot of people there, because i've certainly heard stories about his youth and the people that had a dramatic impact on his life from the time that he was growing up in searchlight, neff. we know he came from modest circumstances. his family grew raised him in a very small home without indoor plumbing. he attended a two-room elementary school in searchlight, nevada. as a child, senator reid's father was a hard-rock miner and his mother took in laundry. he says of his parents that his father gave him quiet and his mother gave him confidence. opportunities were scarce in searchlight, but harry made the most of what he had. his book "the good fight" has a great opening prar that i'd like to -- has a great opening paragraph i'd like to share because it says what life must have been like in the town of searchlight. harry w
